Bayou Bartholomew – The Longest Bayou in the World

Bayou BartholomewIf you’re a fan of fishing or just enjoy getting out into nature, you may want to check out Bayou Bartholomew. Known as the longest bayou in the world, it stretches 359 river miles from Pine Bluff, AR, to the Ouachita River in Sterlington, LA.

The Arkansas River created Bayou Bartholomew some 2,000 years ago when it moved a ways east, leaving its old bed behind. This slowly filled with a variety of run off to become the leisurely bayou we know today. A “bayou” is a slow moving body of water in a low, flat area, usually serving as the outlet of a lake or river. Bayous are often found leading from (and are thus just as often confused with) swamps.

It seems that almost everyone enjoys colorful Christmas lights – and who can blame them. Can you imagine how dark and dull December nights would be without them? You don’t even have to celebrate Christmas to appreciate the warmth, joy, and good will they express during one of the colder times of the year.

Arkansans are no different than anyone else – we love our holiday decorations, too. In fact, we might even like them a little more than most. That’s the sense one gets, looking at a listing of Arkansas’ public holiday light displays!

Stay On Track at the Arkansas Railroad Museum

Arkansas Railroad MuseumThe Arkansas Railroad Museum, in Pine Bluff, AR, is a hands-on museum containing one of the largest collections of historic railroad equipment in the state.

The museum is housed in the shops of the former St. Louis Southwestern (SSW) Railway Cotton Belt Route yard. The museum collection includes an impressive array of rolling stock, railroad memorabilia, and two steam-powered engines, including the last ever built in Arkansas.

In fact, the museum wouldn’t even exist were it not for SSW 819.

Arkansas' 20th Annual Enchanted Land Of Lights & Legends!Pine Bluff Arkansas’ 20th annual Enchanted Land Of Lights & Legends is all fired up and ready to suffuse you with the glow of the holidays. Now through December 31st, 2016.

Pine Bluff’s genuinely breath-taking tribute to the Christmas season is now open! Arkansas’s largest drive-thru display of holiday lights has become a holiday institution. Celebrating 20 years, the 1.3 mile-long attraction boasts more than 280 displays in 180 locations!

Well over 110,000 people attend the Enchanted Land Of Lights & Legends each year, putting it right up there with some of the biggest festivals in Arkansas. So who can blame folks for continuing to come, year after year?

Not only is the Enchanted Land Of Lights & Legends absolutely free to visit but you’ll never see anything like this drive-through display. You’ll see famous characters and situations, some animated, all artfully created with light.

Driving through the course will fill you with warm memories and the joyous spirit of the holidays. There’s even a picture station, so you can preserve your visit in a keepsake photo.

Every year, The Pine Bluff Festival Association accepts orders for Memorial/Honor Stars. Each star is “In Honor of” or “In Memory of” the person or organization that you choose. Your star will also receive recognition in the Enchanted Land Of Lights & Legends program as well as be added to the “Memorial Star” lighted billboard.

The deadline for 2016 Memorial/Honor Stars passed on October 25th, 2016 but they are already taking orders for next year. Consequently, now is the perfect time to order a star for next year!

Donations and purchases made at the Enchanted Land Of Lights & Legends go towards making next year’s display bigger, better, and brighter.
